New Year's Day—a time for reflecting on the past year and
planning for the next. Three events
defined 2013 for me. From January to April, I was working on the committee for
my 50th High School Reunion. My job was to create a booklet that would
function as an updated yearbook. It was an amazing experience as the questionnaires
that I had sent out began to roll in, reacquainting me with classmates, many of
whom I had not seen in decades. It was a joy to create that booklet and the
reunion was everything I had hoped it would be and more.
Two days after the reunion, I went to Roper Hospital for my
first knee replacement surgery. Five
months later I had the second. Painful
surgery followed by painful rehab and the knees are still not fully functional
or pain free. I’ve been told it takes a year to completely recover. I believe
it.
That is pretty much it for 2013-- wonderful excitement surrounding the reunion followed by lots of
discomfort. But the knees are improving. I am back at the gym regularly
following up on rehab and trying to build some stamina so that 2014 will be all
that I hope.
I hope that 2014 will be a year of travel. In February, we
are heading west again with stops in Dallas, to visit my sons; Scottsdale (AZ)
to visit Richard’s cousins; Tucson, to visit my cousins and my last surviving
aunt and uncle, and finally to Las Vegas to visit Richard’s youngest son and
his family. We have decided to take side trips along the way so we may be gone
for a while. On other trips we will visit Richard’s other sons in Louisville,
KY; maybe take a train trip somewhere, go to a resort near Orlando that we like
to visit. I am planning a trip to NC with my sisters to pan for gemstones.
My goals for 2014
Eat less. Move more. (In order to lose at least 52 pounds)
Socialize more (Facebook is great, but face to face is
better)
